Club Championships.
The Arnold Swimming Club Championships have been delayed this year and will now be held every year in the Autumn/Winter Seasons. This is mainly to give our coaches a better idea of swimmers capabilities in preparation for the Nottinghamshire's County Championships which take place in February and March each year. Also this gives more people the chance to take part as the competitions should not interfere with most peoples holiday period during the summer.
Entry forms can be obtained from the Club desk or you can download and print one by clicking here.

Olympic Games.

As most of you will be aware the Olympic Games have been taking place in Beijing over the last 3 weeks. TV coverage has been extensive throughout the entire games.
The 2008 Olympic Games have been one of the best ever for Great Britain Claiming a staggering 19 Gold Medals, 13 Silver Medals and 15 Bronze Medals. Putting Team GB in 4th place on the medals table behind China, USA and Russia.
In the Swimming Events Team GB managed to come 3rd in the medal table behind Team USA and Team Australia winning 2 Bronze Medals, 2 Silver Medals and 2 Gold Medals. Both of Team GB’s Gold Medals in the swimming events were won by local hero Rebecca Adlington.

Rebecca has grown up in Mansfield and has always had a passion for swimming. Starting at the age of 4 and taking part in her first competitions at the age of 10, progressing through her local club and training with Nottingham's Nova Centurion squad under the instruction of Head Coach Bill Furniss. Rebecca has trained hard and worked her way into the record books by not only claiming 2 Gold Medals for Team GB, but for smashing the Women's 800m Freestyle World Record! A huge congratulations to Rebecca and all of Team GB.

All eyes are now focused on the 2008 Paralympics with local hopefuls Sam Hynd (Nova - Sutton), Charlotte Henshaw (Nova - Mansfield) and David Ellis (Derventio - Heanor) in the swimming events. The opening ceremony of the 2008 Paralympics will be held on the 6th September and will be shown live on the BBC.

SWIM 21 PRESENTATION

Arnold Swimming Club were awarded Swim 21 accreditation in May 2008. The award was formally presented on 23rd June 2008 by the Mayor of Gedling, Councillor R J Goodwin to the Chairman of Arnold SC, Jim Shelton. The Club were delighted to welcome the President of Arnold SC, Bill Hammond. Also present were Committee Members from the Club, Rob Clarke, Head Coach Arnold SC and Sasha Matthews who swims for the Club when she is not competing in National Events or representing Great Britain! Sasha is one of the ‘Lloyds TSB local heroes’ selected to receive sponsorship up to the 2012 Olympics and is obviously a massive asset to the Club.

Arnold SC is run by volunteers and currently has over 200 members, mainly from the local community with most swimmers being under 15 years of age. The Chair of Arnold SC, Jim Shelton said ‘Attaining Swim 21 accreditation is a fantastic achievement for the Club. I would like to extend my sincere thanks to all the volunteers who help out at the Club and to all those who have attended training courses to ensure that the accreditation could be possibly. I would particularly like to thank Colin Walton who has worked tirelessly in collating all of the information required for submission and for driving this project’.
Swim 21 is the Amateur Swimming Association’s Club Development model - a planning tool, based on the principles of Long Term Athlete Development, enabling clubs to help athletes, teachers, coaches and administrators to achieve their full potential. It focuses particularly on the needs of athletes - striving to provide them with the best possible support and environment. Swim 21 accreditation is a 'Quality mark'. It recognises nationally and regionally the clubs that are committed to providing safe, effective and quality services for the benefit of their members.

Q - What does that mean for Arnold SC?
A - It means that Arnold have been recognised and awarded the Teaching and Skill Development accreditation, (the only club in Nottinghamshire at the moment), in doing so it proves that the club have the structure and abilities to provide safe, effective and quality services for swimmers and coaches. It also means that as a Swim 21 club we are able to keep pool time and look for more time in other areas as we should now be looked at more favourably over other clubs without swim 21. Also any course’s our coaches attend could be offered at a reduced rate!

Brian Johnson
It is with great regret that we have to announce the death of Brian Johnson, Mansfield SC. Brian was a Past President of the Notts A.S.A. and the first President of the East Midland region of the A.S.A. Brian's Funeral is arranged for Friday 30th May at the Mansfield Crematorium at 2:00pm. Brian's family has requested that there be family flowers only and any donations are to be made to the John Eastwood Hospice. Brian will be sadly missed in the Swimming Community and Arnold Swimming Club would like to send there condolences to Brian's family.
Swim 21
Most of
you will be aware that Arnold Swimming Club has been working towards gaining
Swim21 Accreditation for quite a while now. And the Committee is pleased to
announced that on May 15th, we received news that the national board had made
the decision to grant us with the accreditation.
What is Swim21?
Swim21 is the ASA's Club Development model - a planning tool, based on the
principles of Long Term Athlete Development, enabling clubs to help athletes,
teachers, coaches and administrators to achieve their full potential. It focuses
particularly on the needs of athletes - striving to provide them with the best
possible support and environment.
Swim21 Accreditation is a 'Quality mark'. It recognises nationally and
regionally the clubs that are committed to providing safe, effective and quality
services for the benefit of their members.
Clubs work steadily towards the attainment of a series of outcomes all of which
are seen as essential if the right level of support is to be provided at each
stage of an athlete's development.
Swim21 Accreditation is available to ASA clubs of all aquatic disciplines that
are positioned at one or more of the four levels of:
has a commitment to achieving its equity targets throughout the
sport. Swim 21 is no different and the Association is keen to support clubs
in the shared objective of widening the participation base and hence the
performance of the sport as a whole.
What does that mean for Arnold?
It means that Arnold have been recognised and awarded the Teaching and Skill
Development accreditation, in doing so it proves that we as a club have the
structure and abilities to provide safe, effective and quality services for
swimmers and coaches! Skill Development is the highest accreditation we can
achieve given the pool time and coaching level!
Any other benefits?
As a swim21 club we are able to keep pool time and look for more time in
other areas as we should now be shown a preference above other clubs without
swim21! Also any course’s our couches go on will be offered at a reduced
rate!
Look out for these logo’s on our web site and paperwork from now on!!!

Recently Matthew Tomlin has taken part in the British Schools Biathlon Championships. To take part in this event Matthew competed in the Central England competition back in October 2007 where he came 5th. The British Schools Biathlon Championships took place on Sunday 24th February at Bath University where Matthew was amongst 50 other Qualifiers from all over Britain. The event comprised of a 50m swim and 1000m run. Overall Matthew finished 38th and not only is this a great achievement for Matthew but also for Nottinghamshire, as Matthew was the only competitor from Nottingham. A huge Congratulations to Matthew on this achievement and we wish him the best of luck for his future success.

Congratulations to Andrew Zawadzki
On Wednesday evening Andrew Zawadzki was invited to the Notts County Council Disability Sports Unit Christmas Party and Presentation Evening. Once there Andrew found out that he had been nominated for the "Young Persons Services to Sports" Award - for his voluntary efforts on a Sunday evening teaching a 10 year old boy with ADHD to swim - and to Andrew's surprise, Andrew was the proud recipient of the award. Arnold Swimming Club would just like to say a big congratulations to Andrew and we hope that he continues his voluntary work with these children to greater there success in swimming.

Success for Arnold Swimming Club
Today Arnold competed in both the A final of the West Midlands Division 3 North National Speedo League, and the Notts and District League final. Arnold Swimmers managed to claim a victorious 2nd place in the Notts and District League final, beaten by some very tough opponents from Bramcote Swimming Club by only 4 points!! Also Arnold have had some swimmers taking part in the Speedo League Final at Queens Leisure Centre, Derby. This was a historic night for Arnold Swimming Club as it was the first time we have entered the National League. Going into the final round Arnold were second on points behind Etwall Eagles with both Clubs having won their respective galas in the first two rounds. Arnold managed through great team spirits and team efforts to claim 1st PLACE!!! We would like to thank all of the swimmers who took part in both events. A huge thank you also needs to go to families and friends that have helped out and supported the teams throughout these two leagues this year.
Club assigns new chairman.
With the resignation of Arnold Swimming Clubs chairman, Colin Walton, back in July, the clubs committee have now appointed a new chairman. The Clubs new chairman with immediate effect is Jim Shelton. Most of you will know Jim as he has had a huge involvement within the club from helping to organise our gala squads, Organising the club desk and being the clubs membership secretary. We feel that Jim will have a lot more to offer the club with this new role and wish him the best of luck.
As Jim moves into his new role as Chairman the committee have elected that David Fortescue will take over Jim’s old role as Membership Secretary from the 1st April 2008. David has also been involved with the club for many years now moving from swimmer, club captain, and currently organises the results from swimming galas along with the clubs website. David will take on this challenging job next year as he hopes to develop his role within the club and committee.
Continued success for Sasha Matthews.
The Notts County Council Swimmer of the Year Trophy can only be won once by a swimmer on the County Council Swim Squad and is presented to the swimmer who has made the most improvement and achieved commendable results over the previous 12 months. This year the Trophy has been awarded to Sasha Matthews.
Sasha took an individual bronze medal at the European Junior Championships in
the 400m Freestyle lowering her personal best time considerably in both the heat
and the final. Sasha then helped the Great Britain team to a gold medal as part
of the 4x200m Freestyle team. Sasha then returned immediately to the National
Championships in Sheffield and took a silver medal in the Junior 200m Freestyle
event. Sasha was also a member of our gold-winning 4x200m Freestyle team at the
National Championships.
Website Issues
Throughout July Arnold Swimming Club have had some technical problems with one of its two websites. This has meant that for a few weeks the .org.uk site has been inaccessible. With a lot of hard work and discussion between our hosts and myself, we have finally fixed all of the problems that we were having. if you have sent an e-mail to us in July or in the first two weeks of August at any point and have not received a reply, we kindly ask if you would re-submit the email, as these were not received.
If at any point one of our websites "goes down" or is inaccessible for any reason we would like to remind you that Arnold Swimming Club is currently running two websites. It is very unlikely that both sites will be down at the same time so please visit our alternative site. As a rule as a webmaster, I also make a point that I will only update one website at any one time so that there is always a version of the site that is accessible.

Sasha Matthews success in Antwerp
As most of you know Sasha Matthews joined Arnold Swimming Club at a very young age and has devoted much of her life to swimming and pushing herself that little bit further each time. Along with training with Arnold Swimming Club she was selected to swim for Nottinghamshire's county squad (Nova Centurion). Since swimming for Nova Sasha has worked hard and pushed herself up the ranks within Nova and has been selected to swim for Great Britain. Sasha's most recent achievement is in the European Junior Championships in Antwerp claiming a Bronze Medal for Great Britain in the Women's 400m Freestyle.
