New Gala Season
Well, we hope that you have all had an enjoyable summer and are ready and raring to go with the Autumn season of swimming and competitions.
The first half of 2010 saw some amazing swims by our swimmers over numerous galas at all levels. The Club saw 70 Club Records broken and you, the swimmers claiming over 650 PB's!!
The Final part of this year will see Arnold competing in quite a few galas from the Minor Gala League, the Sports Centre League, Notts and District League and the National ARENA Swimming League. Of course we can not forget our Annual Club Championships (Entries close this Friday!!).
The season kicks off with our own trophy gala at Hucknall this weekend. We have two teams attending this gala and should be a good night. Following on from this we have our Sports Centre League team competing at Sutton on the 11th and then our youngsters in the Minor Gala League at Retford on the 18th.
Hopefully we can get many more PB Times and Club Records in this final part of the year.
Look out for "David's Sad Swimming Facts" in the 2010 Club Round Up at the end of the year for a full breakdown on how we have done as a club in 2010.
For more information about upcomming gala fixtures, please see the fixtures page.
As a general point we would like to remind ALL swimmers that if you take part in a competition that is not a League gala or a Trophy Gala, please let us know so we can track your success and award you any PB's that you should be getting. Even if you swim and do not manage to break a PB Time, still let us know as we like to know how everyone is getting on, and you may even get a mention on the website! If you do not let us know then we can't give you the PB Times on the website.
If you wish to enter any Open competitions and are unsure on how to do so, or if they require electronic entry and you are unsure on how to use the software to do this. Please speak to David Fortescue or Nic Rotton at the club who will be able to help.
Calling All Parents.
From time to time with the different swimming Leagues, we are asked to travel long distances to take part in these galas. We are aware that travelling these distances can become difficult and we will do our best to accommodate you where we can. If you need transport to any gala then please speak to one of the committee at the club who will be able to help. Some of our volunteers at the galas usually travel long distances just to help out and can sometimes have spare seats in their cars that they are more than happy to help people get to the galas.
When running galas we also require volunteer support in all forms, from announcing to recording, and timekeeping to stewarding officials. If you are attending a gala and would like to help out, please speak to a committee member or part of our coaching staff who will be able to help out. With this in mind we are in need of a lot of volunteers for our Club Championships. If you are able to help out in any way please speak to a committee member on the club desk as soon as you can. Any help you can give will be greatly appreciated. Without volunteers we would not be able to do what we do.
Club Championships - Skins
There have been a few comments made over the last few weeks with regards to the Skins Event on the last night of the Club Championships, mainly about the rules and who will be able to take part.
We have now removed the Rules from the website as we are looking at revising these ready for the event to hopefully allow more of you to be able to qualify for this event.
Once the rules have been revised we will put them back on the website and let you all know.
Club Championship Entries
It seems that most of you are now really thinking about the Club Championships for 2010 and what you are entering.
We would like to remind you that the closing date for ALL entries is midnight on Friday 3rd September. That is less than 2 weeks away!! Please note that NO late entries will be accepted.
For those of you that have already entered you would have received a confirmation email of your entry and then a further acceptance email. Please note that this does NOT guarantee your entry is fully accepted. Your entry will only be fully confirmed once you pay the entry fee due at the club desk. If you have entered and not yet paid, then please do so as soon as possible of your entry will not count.
Calling ALL Parents.
If you are available to help out at any of the championships then we would like to hear from you. There are many ways in which you can help and without your help and support we would not be able to run these championships. If you can help please speak to one of the committee who will be able to supply you with more details, or complete a volunteers form and hand it into us at the club desk.

David has now been nominated for the East Midlands Volunteer Award which the winners will be announced at the East Midlands AGM at Loughborough on September 11th - Good luck to David from all at Arnold SC.

Club Champs On-Line Entry
All Swimmers,
There has been a small bug over the last 2 days restricting access to on-line entry for the club championships.
The problem was causing you to be re-directed back to the login page when you clicked to go onto the entry page.
This has now been fixed and you should be able to enter again.
Committee/Poolside Announcement
Jim Shelton is standing down as Chairman at the next Committee Meeting on 14th September. Jims decision has been taken solely as a result of his current employment situation.
The Club are very pleased to announce the appointment of David Osborne as Treasurer and Tony Parker as Assistant Head Coach.
David succeeds Peter Watkins as Treasurer and Tony succeeds Bill Hopkins as Assistant Head Coach.
The Club would like thank Peter, Bill and Jim for the many years service they have given to the Club in fulfilling the above roles and many others during their time at the club.
Jim will remain on the Committee and Bill will continue to support the Club and the County by officiating at Galas. Peter will be standing down from the Committee and concentrating on the early morning and evening journeys to Nova with his children, although will still remain as a member of Arnold Swimming Club.
Time Trials - Round Up
As most of you should be aware, Arnold Swimming Club have recently held some 200m Time Trials. These were open to ALL members of the club and were run under ASA Laws and therefore were eligible for PB Times, Club Records and County Qualifying Times.
Although the Time Trials got off to a rocky start with the first session being cancelled due to an incident in the pool, the remaining sessions were a big success.
With a total of 50 swimmers taking part over the 3 sessions swimming in the 200m Back, Breast, Fly, Free and IM races, you managed to set 8 new club records and gain 115 Personal Best Times.
A huge congratulations goes out to all of the swimmers involved.
Arnold Swimming Club would also like to extend its thanks out to all of our parents and helpers who made the time trials possible.
A big thank you also comes from Teresa Kelly to all of the swimmers for being extremely well behaved during the time trials and the support and encouragement to fellow swimmers was second to none. Please can we keep this up for the upcoming gala season.
Full results can be found in the members area or the SportSystems Results service can be found here

Nottingham Northern Open Meet
A huge Congratulations to our 6 swimmers, Beth Archer, Georgia Bramley, Becky Dames, Luke Archer, Joseph Dames and Josh Bramley, who took part in the Notts Notrhern Junior Open Meet today.
An Amazing 21 PB times were set between these six swimmers and getting in to 7 Finals and almost 8 with Beth Archer having to swim in a swim off to try and get into a final which unfortunately she did not make.
A huge thanks also goes to Carol Bramley and Karen Dames for acting as the Arnold coaches on poolside. Thanks for your help and support and not to mention the encouragement you gave to our swimmers.
Results can be found in the members area.
PB Times
It was discussed at this years AGM and also at committee meetings since then that Arnold Swimming Club will be recording ALL PB Times for our swimmers if you are representing Arnold or not.
In the past swimmers could only claim a PB time if they had swum the time in a competition for Arnold, or as an Arnold Swimmer at any Open Meets.
As it was rightly pointed out, a Personal Best time is Personal to you as a swimmer, therefore has no regard whether you swim for Arnold, Nova, GB or any other organisation.
You will now be able to claim PB times for any competition you swim.
RULES:
Please note that we will not be accepting any times that are before 1st June 2010.
Forms will be available for you to fill in from the club desk from Monday. These need to be completed in full and returned to the Club Desk or to David Fortescue as soon as possible.
We will be setting up an on-line submission form but this is currently being tested and we hope to have it finished before the end of September.
If you are claiming more PB's than there is room for on the entry form then please use multiple forms.
Although we have kept a record of everyone's PB times in the past we will only continue to automatically recognise PB's when you swim for Arnold in league galas for Arnold or in the County Championships. If you swim in ANY open meets or in and competition for another club then we need you to let us know by using these forms. If you swim in an Open meet as an Arnold swimmer then there is no need to fill in a form but we do need you to contact the club through the contact form (please send these to either "Results" or "General").
200m Time Trials
This is a general reminder to ALL swimmers.
You should be entering as many of the time trials as you can. We have extended the closing date for entries until Tuesday 29th June as the dates of the events have moved. Please ignore the closing date on the entry forms.
There will not be any training on the nights of these Time Trials.
Events:
Friday 2nd July - Freestyle
Sunday 4th July - Backstroke
Friday 23rd July - Breaststroke
Sunday 25th July - Butterfly
Sunday 25th July - IM
If you have not got a PB time for an event yet then simply tick the event or enter "No Time" and we will enter you. As long as we get the required poolside support then the times WILL count as PB times and possibly even Club Records!!
Entry forms can be collected from the Club Desk and should be returned to David Fortescue before Tuesday 29th June.
2011 Counties - Dates
Provisional Dates for the 2011 County championships have now bee released.

Final Results from Jacob
Yesterday saw Jacobs final swims in Germany in the 400m Freestyle and the 100m Backstroke.
Jacob swam his 400m Freestyle Heat in a time of 4:53.57 giving him 2nd place for his age group. Jacob's final swim of the competition was the 100m Backstroke where he managed to come 2nd in his age group in an impressive time of 1:13.06.
Huge Congratulations to Jacob. See you at training later!!
ASC - Fun Night
Arnold Swimming Club hosted a fun night at Water Meadows Leisure Centre in Mansfield on Saturday night. Event though we hired the entire complex for the use of Arnold Swimming Club we were limited to 100 places.
From those people that went it was an enjoyable night of just pure messing around and relaxing, which makes a change to the usual Saturday nights that we have when we get together at a swimming pool.
Everyone got on well with each other, but the usual Saturday night competition was still racing through some of us as we set up a small competition to see who could record the fastest time down the yellow slide. This was won by Kyle Walton who set a time of 6.35 seconds!! However, the competitive nature of Chris Brown was not happy with this so, to try and beat Kyle's time, went to get changed into his "Fast Skins". Unfortunately when Chris got out of the changing rooms the Pool Staff shut the slides. Better Luck next time Chris.
With the senior swimmers looking after the younger swimmers, and when the waves came on, those younger swimmers saving the parents from drowning, a great night was had by all, finally letting their hair down after a tough few moths of intense training and set of competitions. A HUGE Thanks goes out to Teresa Kelly who organised the entire evening.
Hopefully we will have a similar event in the near future.
More From Germany
Jacob Parker has again swum in the International German Open in Berlin today.
Jacob swam in the 100m Freestyle and the 200m Backstroke. In the 100m Freesyle Jacob topped his age with a time of 59.04 and got put through to the Junior finals to be held in the afternoon. Following this Jacob managed to come 8th overall for the 200m Backstroke with an impressive time of 2:35.58.
In the afternoon, Jacob swam the 100m Freestyle Final, shaving 0.14 seconds off his heat time to claim the Silver medal!!
Congratulations Jacob!
Jacob in Germany
We have just heard that Jacob Parker who is currently swimming for Team GB in Germany has just swum in the 200m Freestyle Heats and has gone through to the Senior Mens B Final as the youngest swimmer!
Jacob won his age group by just under 7 seconds from fellow GB Team mate Jack Thomas!!
Jacob swum his final against other top Disability swimmers from around the world including Fellow GB Team mate Anthony Stephens. Looking at the times that all of the swimmers gained from the heats Jacob was lying in fourth place but was a great contender for any of the medals.
Jacob swam his final in a time of 2:14.01 which with the Disability points this put Jacob 3rd!
Live results can be found here (Although they are in German!).
Congratulations Jacob.

This is a big step forward for the club to be able to provide this service and we hope that you will find it easier to use this new feature compared to the traditional paper-based forms.

On the night we finished 5th with one first place gained by Adriano Staiano, 15PB's and a speeding ticket for swimming too fast gained by Ben Hewitt in the butterfly - well done Ben! Nice to be told that you are going too quick!!
A really big well done to Maisie Chung who only joined the Club recently and gained a County Qualifying Time in her first gala just 2 days before her 10th birthday! Congratulations also go to Grace Berrington who set a Personal Pest Time and represented the Club for the first time and to all the other swimmers many of whom have not competed in many galas.

Bill Hopkins
It is with great regret that we have to inform you that after more than 17 years at Arnold Swimming Club, Bill Hopkins, Granddad to the Kids, has decided that it has come to that time in his life that he is retiring from coaching swimming at the Club.
Bill will be taking some much deserved rest away from the club after a continuous 17 years of poolside support.
Bill's poolside career started when his son, Peter, became a member of Arnold Swimming Club. On one of the club nights, the clubs coaches were running low and he was asked if he could help out on poolside. Since then we have very rarely had a session at Arnold without Bill as a coach.
Throughout the years Bill has seen many coaches come and go from the club and has been there to support them all. He has helped hundreds of children come through the club from non-swimmers to world class athletes. Not only has Bill helped coaches and swimmers but has been a mentor to our officials.
Bill will still continue to help out officiate at swimming competitions for the club and other clubs although we will not see him on club nights at Arnold coaching.
We would like to wish Bill all the happiness in his retirement from the club, but we hope to have you around the club in the years to come.

Well done to Benjamin Heath, Ella Mageira, Joseph Dames and Bethany Archer who set Club Records and also to Emily Keen, Julia Lamport and Charlie Wood who represented the Club for the first time.
The Club would also like to extend it's thanks to all the officials and poolside helpers who supported the Club on the night as we were co-hosting this Gala.

Pool Rescheduling
Following on from discussions between Arnold LC and Arnold SC, the Club are proposing the following changes to the pool sessions. We will have a 2hr session at Arnold LC on Sundays from 5 - 7pm which takes effect from Sunday 13th June. The change to the Tuesday session takes effect from 25th May. The last Sunday session at Nottingham University will be 6th June.
Although, all the other session times remain the same we have been asked by the Head of Leisure at Gedling Borough Council to consider moving the Thursday sessions from the current 7.00pm - 9.00pm to 7.15pm - 9.15pm. As such the club has started consultation with parents and have organised a book on the front desk for any parents wishing to make comments on this proposal.
The times stated below may include set up and take down time as agreed with the respective Leisure Centres.
Monday - 1st session in the main pool will be 45 minutes and will be widths concentrating on technique. The session will run from 7 - 7.45pm. The 8 - 9pm session will remain unchanged as lengths. Swimmers invited to both sessions will remain unchanged. Small pool session will also remain unchanged.
Tuesday - This session will continue to run from 7 - 8pm and will be strictly by invitation only as we only have 4 lanes. Swimmers invited to this session have already been contacted. This session will be reviewed in early September.
Wednesday - (Portland LC 8 - 9pm) Any swimmer attending the 8 - 9pm session on Monday or Thursday will be invited to this session with a maximum number of 32 swimmers being accommodated. Criteria may be applied if the number exceeds 32 swimmers although the Club does not anticipate this.
Thursday - 1st and 2nd sessions in the main pool will remain unchanged and be lengths with swimmers invited to both sessions remaining unchanged. Small pool session will also remain unchanged.
Friday - (Southglade LC 8 - 9.30pm) Attendance will be by invitation only as at present. Senior swimmers not invited are welcome to attend the 8 - 9pm session at Arnold. The Arnold 7 - 8pm will be run similar to the Monday session namely widths.
Sunday - (5 - 7pm) - Both sessions will be run as per the Thursday session as lengths. When the Club train at Loughborough, this session will only run from 6 - 7pm as the Club cannot guarantee to provide poolside support at two venues. This will be for the earlier session swimmers although at present we don't know what attendance will be like at the Sunday sessions and there is a possibility that swimmers who are not invited to Loughborough may attend this session. Swimmers who are invited to train at Loughborough will not be invited to this session as an alternative. The Loughborough dates for the remainder of 2010 are 11th July, 19th Sept, 24th Oct and 14th Nov (can be found on the fixtures list) when the Sunday sessions will therefore run 6 - 7pm as stated above.
Nova A/B - when these swimmers train with us in August they are very welcome to attend the above sessions apart from the Tuesday night session at Arnold LC which is by invitation to previously named swimmers.
David and James on ASA Youth Forum
The ASA are always looking for fresh ideas and new volunteers to help out in all aspects of Aquatic Sport. This can be from helping to coach, behind the scenes doing administrative work to becoming an official at competitions.
Recently the ASA have decided to get some new programmes together to help encourage younger people to get involved in volunteering in sport. The current target is to get young volunteers actively involved in sports volunteering and trained up ready for the London 2012 Olympic Games.
As most of you will know, two of our senior swimmers, David Fortescue and James shelton, have been involved with Arnold Swimming Club for a many years and both do a lot of volunteering not just within the Club but with other Swimming Clubs around Nottinghamshire and its neighbouring cities.
From this David and James have been selected by the ASA to join 7 other people from around the country to spearhead its new "ASA Youth Forum" which will look at the different ways young volunteers are involved in sport and put together initiatives to get more young volunteers involved in sport and aiming to have as many young volunteers helping out at the Olympic and Paralympic games in 2012.
Sport relies heavily on volunteers and without them we would not be able to run clubs and competitions that we have all come to be part of. On behalf of Arnold Swimming Club we would like to Thank ALL of our volunteers and a huge congratulations for David Fortescue and James Shelton for there selection by the ASA to take part in this new initiative.
If you would like to help out and volunteer in any way then please speak to one of the committee who would be more than happy to answer any questions you may have or to get you involved and helping out in some way.

Sports Centre League - Round 2
Excellent night in the 2nd round of the Sports Centre League at Hucknall with Arnold finishing in 1st place with 17 first places and 15 personal best (PB) times.
It was an eventful evening in which we started the Gala in lane 5 and finished up in lane 1 due to problems with the starting blocks in lane 5 - thanks to the vigilant and ever dependable referees Malcolm Swinburn and Alan Urch for sorting this out.
There were some excellent PB's with Hannah Rotton, James Dwyer, Sam Munday, Joshua Mageira, Bethany Archer, Matt Hudswell, Charlotte and Victoria Kelly taking 4 seconds or more off their previous PB's.

Website Outage
We would like to apologise for the interruption of the website over the past couple of days.
This was totally out of our control and was down to our hosts LCN. LCN took all of the websites down at 11:30pm on Saturday night to perform a mass upgrade to all of there hosting packages. The upgrades were due to be completed in the early hours of Sunday morning however a few things went wrong which caused our site to become unavailable for the entirety of Sunday.
We are now back up and running again so hopefully there will not be any more interruptions.
If you find that the website is down for more than an hour then please view our twitter site here. If there are major issues we will update on here to let you all know.
Again we would like to apologise for the interruption.

There will be a slight delay in the posting of the results to the website as we are running some maintenance behind the scenes which is preventing us from publishing them.
They should be published early tomorrow.

Spring Competition Round 2
Well done to all the swimmers who represented the Club in yet another tough draw in the 2nd round of the Spring Competition. It was always going to be tough particularly as we struggled with availability of 8/9 year old boys and swam 2 events for no points. However, we did finish 4th with 137 points one point ahead of Carlton Forum.
On the night we gained four 1st places with Geena Johnson winning the Butterfly and IM and Rachel Martin winning the backstroke. First place was also gained by the 14 year old girls freestyle relay where Abby Walton and Regan Jordan teamed up with Geena and Rachel to win. Geena also gained a Club Record in the IM which was a fantastic achievement after illness deprived her of competing in the last round. Well done again to our 9 years and under relay girls namely Georgia Bramley, Robyn Galloway, Rachel Brown and Hannah Davies who had two 2nd places to go with the 2 second places in the last round.
Whilst we are unlikely to get into the A final, it would be a fantastic achievement if we could get into the B final and win it and with the current squad of swimmers we are certainly capable of doing that! Let's all look forward to the final round on the 8th May!

NASL Final League Table
Following our exciting final round win at Aylesbury in December we have just received confirmation of the West Midlands Division 2 League Table. The club has finished a creditable 11th out of 24 teams which included teams from the City of Hereford, Wolverhampton, Luton, Braunstone and the City of Coventry to name but a few.
In the 3 seasons Arnold SC have now competed in the NSL we have finished as Swim-off Finalists, gained promotion from Division 3 and now consolidated our potition in Division 2. In comparison to other teams who have much larger squads of swimmers this is a fantastic achievement. The NASL remains the premier event in the country for swimming clubs, congratulations to everyone, swimmers, helpers and supporters, who have all contributed to the club's success in this competition.
Minor Gala League 2nd Round
The A team finished third with 202 points in the second round of the Minor Gala at Arnold with 7 first places gained by Grace Perry, Jack Simpson-Hallas, Alex Driver, Abby Walton, Hannah Drewett and Kiran Watkins. Many of these swimmers also gained PB's as did Josh Bramley, Bethany Archer, Joseph Dames, Regan Jordan and Ella Rotton.

Although there were no first places, there were second places for Matthew Gomersall, Chloe Harrison, Eleanor Hudswell and the 10years and under boys relay team namely Matthew Gomersall, Jamie Burton, James Dwyer and Flynn Asher. There was also an amazing 20 Personal Best times. 6 years of .co.uk Ending
Please be aware that if you are still using the www.arnoldswimmingclub.co.uk website address that you will no longer be able to access the site this way after the 10th February. After 6 years of having a .co.uk and a .org.uk website address the Arnold Swimming Club Committee have decided that we have no need to have both and we are just going to have the one website address. If you have the website saved as a bookmark or a favourite then please make sure that it is for our www.arnoldswimmingclub.org.uk address.
If you are unsure about this then please speak to our Webmaster, David Fortescue, at any time around poolside either at training sessions or at swimming galas.
Spring Competition
Well done to all the swimmers who represented the Club in a very tough draw in the 1st round of the Spring Competition. There was very little between the top 4 Clubs after the first round of swims and eventually we finished 4th only 5 points behind CABSC. On the night we gained 7 first places, 9 Personal Bests and 3 Club Records. 14 year old Rachel Martin won all 3 of her individual events in the Open age group, Kiran Watkins added another 2 victories to go with his 3 first places last Saturday and Alex Driver also added a 1st place in the backstroke to go with his victory in the freestyle last weekend.
Particularly pleasing was the excellent performances of our 9 years and under relay swimmers with Luke Archer, Flynn Asher, Jack Simpson-Hallas and Matthew Fallon finishing 1st and 2nd in their relays and the girls Georgia Bramley, Robyn Galloway, Rachel Brown and Hannah Davies finishing 2nd in both their relay events.
Welcome and congratulations to Matthew Fallon and Jorge Phenix-Coyne who represented the Club for the first time.
Let's hope for an easier draw in Round 2 on the 6th February.

Club Swimming Hats
It is great to announce that through Sponsorship, we are now in the position to reward swimmers who represent the club at the following Inter Club Galas with a new club cap free of charge.

- National Swimming League
- Spring Competition
- Minor Gala League
- Sports Centre League
- Notts & District League
The idea behind this is two fold, firstly to bring unity to the squad of swimmers representing the Club and secondly to display a strong club togetherness through the one Club Cap.
We ask that you now wear the club cap with pride when competing in the Gala you have been selected for, and for any other Gala's, Open meets, Counties you are swimming in as an Arnold swimmer. We do not want you to swim in any other Cap while representing the Club.
To ensure fairness we will issue these free caps to those who wear caps when competing and will expect you to sign for them at the Club desk. Unfortunately we will only be able to issue 1 free cap per swimmer per season; however you can still purchase caps from the club desk.
Please use your old style caps Blue or Black for training along with any other caps types/designs and keep your yellow cap for competitions. The best way to ensure it stays in good condition is to wash it out in cold tap water when it has been used and then to dry it with a towel.
Many of you have already purchased official club kit which you wear both on poolside and to and from events, everyone looks fantastic and part of the team which is the whole point of "One" kit for all.
