| Welcome to the Autumn edition of the ASC newsletter. | |||||||||||||||||
| Summer has come and gone very fast again this year and the Club has been undergoing lots of change since the new head coaches have been in place. The Summer is normally a quiet time of the season but attendance and commitment during the summer holidays has been excellent and this has continued into Autumn. |

| During the Club Championship we had a staggering 506 personal best times and 19 Club records set by Ellie Blakey, Nathan Roome, Ellie Davison, Henry Osborne, Eloise Towsey, Joseph Blackmore and Luke Archer. Of the 19 Club Records a staggering 9 were set by Ellie Blakey! Well done Ellie and all the other swimmers who competed in this years Championship. Can all swimmers who won trophies in last year’s gala’s please start to return them to the club ready for this year’s winners. |

| Presentation Evening | |||||||||||||||||
![]() |
This years Club Championship trophies presentation will take place on Friday 2nd December at Arnold Working Mens Club from 7.30pm with tickets being available at the Club desk priced at adults £2, children/OAP’s £1 and swimmers FREE. Admission on the night will be by ticket only as we have restrictions on the capacity at Arnold Working Mens Club. Due to the large increase in the number of swimmers competing in this years championship and the fact that the presentation evening is a Friday rather than a Wednesday we are anticipating a lot of interest in the evening so please get your tickets early. Please note that swimmers, who are admitted free will also require a ticket to gain admission. | ||||||||||||||||

| Mansfield Major Oak Open Meet | |||||||||||||||||
| All the best to Grace Perry, Megan Perry, Alex Driver, Katherine Driver, Maisie Chung, Eleanor Hudswell, Hannah Davies, Emily Keen, Robyn Galloway, Emelia Osborne, Georgia Bramley, Regan Jordan, Mitchell Jordan, James Dwyer, Natalie Bacon, Hannah Drewett, Kirsten Gilding, Abby Walton, Luke Archer, Bethany Archer, Nathan Roome, Flynn Asher, Charlotte Kelly, Sahana Muthuswamy, Kiran Watkins and Rohan Watkins who will be representing the Club at the Major Oak Open Meeting at WaterMeadows on 19th/20th November. This is probably the best attendance we’ve had as a Club at this Open Meeting which is one of the few local Open Meetings that incorporates 200m events in all 4 strokes. A big thanks to parents, swimmers and coaches for supporting this. We will have coaches on poolside to support our swimmers and hopefully generate a really great atmosphere and some great swims. |

| Club Kit | |||||||||||||||||

|||||||||||||||||
The new club kit is available now to ALL of our swimmers and includes the following items:
These are on sale through the club, please take a look at the information on the website, or at the desk. We have a number of items kept at the desk for swimmers to try on to help in the choice of size. Order forms can be printed off the website or collected from the club desk. |

| Open Meets | |||||||||||||||||
| The Club are looking to encourage more swimmers to compete in Open Meetings where swimmers compete in their chosen events against swimmers from other swimming clubs often from outside the Region. April Hudswell has kindly agreed to work with other members of the Club to co-ordinate this. Open meetings and swimmers will be identified and the Club will provide details of the events, dates, location, entry forms, cost of each event and cut-off times (if applicable) to swimmers/parents. Completed entry forms and the cost for entry should then be returned to the Club desk. Cheques should be made payable to Arnold Swimming Club. For further information please speak to April, David Osborne, David Fortescue, Martin Marrow, Michelle Parker or Jim Shelton. We will would like to remind all swimmers that it is important to let David Fortescue know if you have set a Personal Best time or Club Record in an Open Meeting so that our records can be updated. |

| Coaches Corner | |||||||||||||||||
| It is important that when you come training you come to train and when you are in the pool you listen to your coaches, they are experienced in swimming knowledge and are there to make you better swimmers, we are not a debating society, we do not negotiate what we want to do when we are training, we get into the pool and give 100% in terms of technique, concentration, commitment for the time that we are training. The sets that are written by Dave Palmer and Tony Parker are designed for and aimed at improving stamina, technique and speed, you will NOT get faster unless you work hard, we wouldn’t be writing these sets if we didn’t believe in you. |

| Hydration | |||||||||||||||||
| The ideal situation regarding hydration is as follows. Whilst travelling to training you should be sipping water or diluted juice, this will ensure that you arrive for training hydrated and ready for action. Whilst training you should at every opportunity (usually whilst you are waiting for the next part of the set to start) be sipping/drinking your preferred drink, this can water, diluted juice or some swimmers prefer water with a little bit of salt in, this helps to replenish salts in your body that are lost when you sweat in training, whatever your preferred drink is you should have at least ONE LITRE of it on poolside whilst training, if you train at Southglade, especially on a Friday night, because we cannot guarantee the quality of the water, it is important that you have sufficient drink to cover that session. The coaches will be checking your water bottles. After training, it is quite easy to forget to drink but again you should be sipping so that when you go to bed you are fully hydrated and you get a good night’s sleep. When at gala’s/ open meets it is important that you have enough of the right drink to see you through to the end of the competition. REMEMBER – you can self diagnose if you are hydrated or not, the clearer your wee the more hydrated you are, which is good. |
|||||||||||||||||
| Nutrition | |||||||||||||||||
| Eating the right things is just as important as drinking the right stuff. I am sure that most of you will have had your tea before training and I am sure that burger and chips are not on the menu every night and that all parents are conscious of the 5 a day, but it is what we eat when at galas that I want to highlight. Anything that contains jelly, especially jelly is ok, this is because it will give you a sugar rush and help your energy stores for racing, fruit bars, mini flapjacks, Jaffa cakes, snack bars are just as good, bananas are brain food, they do not immediately help your energy systems but because of the potassium levels in them they help stimulate your brain and will help you think about your race, so a combination of bananas chunks and a couple of Jaffa cakes about 10 minutes before you race should be an ideal combination. |

| Dear Santa, Christmas is coming and I have been a good swimmer this year, I have trained really hard (most of the time) and listened to my coach (most of the time), for Christmas I would like five out of the following six please:- Goggles that don’t mysteriously tighten or loosen during training causing me to stop during the important main set (and a second pair just in case). A kickboard of my very own that appears on poolside at the beginning of each session and is ready to use rather than relying on kickboards that have been used by other people who have decided that leaving teeth marks in them is fun. A self filling bottle that will hold at least a LITRE rather than the one I bring to training that is the size of a thimble. A pair of fins that grow with my feet so that when we use fins in swimming I don’t have to say to my coach “Mine don’t fit me” A tape measure that measures at least 5 metres so that when my coach asks me to streamline from each turn to at least five metres I will remember how far it is. A picture of my coach who is my inspiration for training well and doing things right. Hope the elf’s and Rudolph are ok, do you want some more of daddy’s whiskey on Christmas Eve like previous years? Love and kisses. A Winner XXXX |
