Chairman's Message from Colin Walton

The Annual General meeting of Arnold Swimming Club took place on Wednesday 20th April at Arnold Leisure Centre. It was great to see so many faces and attendance was a real improvement on previous years. Minutes of the AGM are available for you to have a look at on the Club notice board.
One of the items on the agenda was the Chairman's report which outlines future plans for the club.
  * * * * *
Over the last few months the Club has looked at the way our gala team is selected and the number of competitions the club enters. Last year we entered a total of 12 galas in 4 copetitions.
Notts & District
Spring Competition
Sring and Autumn Minor Galas

Historically the best result would come from the Notts and District League as a number of the larger clubs also swim in the Speedo League leaving the Notts and District teams a little weaker.
It was the second round of the Notts and District that highlighted a problem with team selection. As a result of which the following actions were taken.
The strongest team on paper would be selected for our league galas.
Not to disappoint other gala squad members it was agreed to enter more trophy galas during the year.
In order to make sure the strongest team is picked we need to implement a time trial system. We are now in a position to start these trials and the unofficial results will be posted on the notice board.
As a result these small changes we have competed as follows since the second round of the Notts and District:
  • Winners of the 'B' Gala Notts and District - 7th in the County.
  • 5th Place in the 'A' Spring Minor Gala - 5th in the County.
  • Spring Competition - we await confirmation on making the 'B' final of this competition and we will aim for a top 3 finish.
  • Trophy Gala held by Nottingham Northern Swimming Club - Arnold finished joint 2nd.

These results show an improvement in positions and all the swimmers need to be congratulated.

County Championships:
  • All swimmers finished in top 20
  • 9 years girls 8th
  • 9 year boys 10th
  • 10 year boys 18th
  • 11 year boys 2nd, 3rd, 8th and 16th
  • 13 year girls 1st
  • 14 year boys 14th
  • 16-18 year girls 50m breast 4th, 100m breast 5th, 100m IM 6th

For the last few months the bumber of swimmers and parents have shown concern about training. This is not an area for Committee Members to comment as on poolside any Committee Member is a poolside helper and so the questions were asked to the Head Coach at our last Committee meeting. As a result of this meeting our Head Coach offered his resignation, which was put to a Comittee vote and accepted.
We are now looking for a full time Head Coach and in the meantime Matt has agreed to stand in as Head Coach until a replacement is appointed. The only thing the Committee has asked is that Matt looks at as many swimmers needs during training as possible.
The Coaching staff will, in the near future, be asked to list some key objectives for each individual swimmer to aim to achieve. These could take the form of any or all of the following:

  • Improved Times
  • Longer Distance
  • Movement of Lanes
  • Competing in Open Competitions
Having a goal will hopefully help with traing. Log books will be offered for sale to our swimmers to record PB's and Distances.
During the next year we should look to the following competition and results.

  • Reach 'A' Final of Autumn Minor Gala
  • Reach 'B' Final of Notts & District
  • Reach 'A' Final of Spring Minor Gala 2006
  • Reach 'B' Final of Spring Competition 2006
These gala aims are real and we should all encourage our swimmers to train/compete for gala places.
As a result of time trials nobody's position is guaranteed and if a swimmers' time improves they will make the team.
Finally, I would like to thank all that help to keep this club going without pay but with great stress. Anyone wishing to join the Committee please feel free to contact any member for help and advice.

  Now for sme good news

It has recently been announced that Sasha Matthews, one of our swimmers who trains and swims for Nova has achieved the ranking of No. 1 in Great Britain in her age group for Freestyle and Butterfly.

well Done Sasha!

  Finances

Thse of you who attended the Annual General Meeting or have read the minutes will be aware of the current financial situation of the club. Unfortuanately mainly due to an increase in pool hire, it has come to light that the club's finances are not as healthy as they should be. It has therefore been necessary to increase training fees from £1.70-£2.20 per session in the large pool. Training fees in the small pool are to be £1.50. However, as from May payment for training sessions may be made monthly by standing order or by cash/cheques during the first week of each month.

Monthly payment will cost £9.00 for swimmers up to the age of 8, £12.50 for swimmers aged 9 to 11 and £15 for swimmers aged 12 and over (age as at 31st December 2005). Consessions will be made for families with 3 or more swimmers.

Monthly payment is an option used by many other clubs and means that if a swimmer attends 2 or more sessions a week, you will be making a saving. It will also ensure a regular income for the club.

Details will be available from the Club Desk from the beginning of May, together with new registration forms.

P.S - In order to assist in the Club's financial recovery, Dany Cracolici has agreed to take ver the role of Treasurer.

  Tuesday Nights

Would swimmers please note that Tuesday night is for Gala Squad. All new swimmers can only attend by invitation only. If you are in doubt please ask Matt.

  Fun Swim (Delayed)
Unfortunately it has been necessary to delay the Fun Swim Evening until the night of the third annual gala, Saturday 1st October, 2005.

  ASA Categories

At the Annual General Meeting it was brought to the attention of the committee that many of you are unaware of the different categories of members in the Club. Arnold Swimming Club has to pay a yearly fee to the ASA for each of its members and the amount varies depending on the category of the member.
The fee is usually included in the Annual Subscription to the Club and varies from £3 to £17 depending on the member.
Jim Shelton has kindly agreed to clarigy the different categories.
Category 1 - All members of any age who are learning to swim or who are swimmers at any level, who do not compete in Open Galas. They can swim in local competitions such as the Minor Gala, Notts and District, Spring Competitions and Nottinghamshire County Championships.
Category 2 - All member of any age group who compete in Open Competitions, such as Leander Open, Major Oak, Worksop Open and Falcon Open.
Category 3 - Members not included in Categories 1 or 2 and include Administrators, coaches, helpers and qualified officials.
Hope this helps.

  CLUB CAPTAINS

At the recent Annual General Meeting a vote was helf to decide the new Captains and Vice Captains.
It was announced that Tabitha Muir-Light will be the Girls Captain and David Fortescue will be the Boys Captain.

Vice Captains will be Laura Brown and Peter Hopkins.

I'm sure you will give Tabitha and David every support during the forthcoming year.

  Gala Squad Selection

Would all members please be aware that Team Selection is made on merit only, i.e the fastest swimmers in the age group will be chosen to compete. In oreder to maintain an up to date list of event times, the Coaching Staff have arranged a number of time trials, where swimmers have the chance to show how they have improved. As a competing Club it is important we compete with our best squad and please be assured that no place is automatically assured. All swimmers have to earn their place.

  Results

There have been several galas since the last newsletter, including the last round of the Spring Minor Gala League, the Spring Competition, Gladys Hull Trophy, Reeves Trophy and a Trophy Gala at Sherwood Colliery Swimming Club.

Our younger swimmers did exceptionally well to finish the A League of the Spring Minor Gala League in 5th position, leaving them 5th in the COunty. Arnold Swimming Club also made the B Final of the Spring Competition and finished in 4th place against some tough opposition. Arnold A team finished second in the Gladys Hull Trophy closely behing Carlton Forum with the B team finishing 5th.

A gala at Sherwood Colliery gave a few inexperienced gala swimmers the chance to compete for the first time. Whereas the Reeves Trophy Gala at Hucknall meant that sme swimmers had to control their speed in order to collect points (Events had cut-off times and if these were exceeded swimmers were disqualified).

However, once swimmers got the hang of holding back, Arnold finished in second place.
