Welcome to the Summer edition of the ASC newsletter
Since the last Newsletter the Notts ASA County Championships have finished with some great individual and teams performances well done to all those who took part.

  • Our performance in round one and two of the Spring Competition unfortunately was not good enough for us to make the ’A’ Final. However in true Arnold style we took our place in the ’B’ Final and with some solid swims managed 1st place and with it the ’B’ Final trophy.
  • The Sports Centre League continues to see some great swims from our team.
  • The Gladys Hull Trophy Gala saw us competing against a very strong CABSC and Mansfield teams. Our ‘A’ team came a creditable 3rd and our ‘B’ team 6th.
For full reports on the above gala’s please see the website in the members section.
  Club Championships
Arnold SC is a community and competitive swimming club and as such we want ALL our swimmers to learn to swim and then compete in gala’s and other competitions. The best time ALL of our swimmers have to do this is at our own Club Championships held this year on the evenings of Saturday 3rd October and Saturday 7th and 28th November, please put these dates in your diary.
With this in mind Rob Clarke, Head Coach, along with the rest of the clubs Teachers and Coaches plan to have EVERY swimmer at the club taking part in this years Club Championships. The Club will guide every swimmer in terms of what events each swimmer should be entering and this includes ALL the swimmers in the Teaching Pool for which the Splash and Dash event is perfect.
This change of approach will hopefully help support those swimmers, parents and guardians who have not had any experience of or do not think that the Club Championships is for them! Remember the reason why we learn to swim at the club and then continue to train so hard is so that we can see results of all the hard work in a competitive event.
  Club Kit
The new club kit is available now to ALL of our swimmers and includes the following items:

  • Polo Shirts
  • Hoddies
  • Poolside Shorts
  • Woolly Hats
  • New Arnold SC Swim Caps
These are on sale through the club, please take a look at the information on the website, or at the desk. We have a number of items kept at the desk for swimmers to try on to help in the choice of size. Order forms can be printed off the website or collected from the club desk.
  Coaches Corner
The Club uses the Notts County Championships as its ‘Target Meet’ and as such ALL the Squad training is planned on a 12 month cycle. This is then broken down into 14 weeks sections which allow us to work towards the National Swimming League and end of season League gala’s. It is important to understand that every swimmer develops at different points throughout these cycles, however the mix of hard intensity training, distance training, sprint training and most importantly technique work are all elements that are required to give the swimmer the best chance to perform to their maximum ability.
Fins are an important part of the Squad swimmers kit, please make sure you purchase the correct type, these are the short type and can be purchased from SwimShop, please ask at the desk for details if you are not sure.
Following the last Newsletter the number of swimmers bringing water bottles with them for training has improved dramatically, lets now make sure we use these on poolside and drink while we are training, remember Dehydration leads to poor performance, a loss of concentration and headaches. Please ensure the water bottle you have does not have a removable top as these can be VERY dangerous both on poolside and in the water.
Loughborough University 50 metre Pool Training
Some of our squad members have now attended 4 separate 50 metre pool training sessions at Loughborough University. These were something the club coaches were keen to look at as it gives our swimmers the chance to experience long course training and is useful for the Midland Championships, Open Meets and is very different to training in a usual 25 metre pool. Now we have gained some experience from these training sessions it is our intension to ‘open them up’ to more swimmers. This will be done by invitation only, we will hopefully have sessions in both June and July, dates to be confirmed.
  Open Meet reminder
Again a general reminder from David Fortescue regarding Open Meet results. We would like to remind all swimmers that it is important to let David know when you are taking part or have taken part in an Open Meet, this way David can ensure the swimmers results get posted on the website. You can contact David through the website by selecting "Webmaster", "Results Co-Ordinator" or "Membership Secretary" on the contact form, alternatively you can speak to David on poolside.
  Sponsorship
As you are all aware we are trying to find sponsorship for the club. Please have a chat with your employer, you never know they may be interested in sponsoring the club? We can provide a presentation (on CD) of the club for any prospective sponsor to view and we would be more than happy to discuss what we are hoping to achieve with sponsorship.
We would also like to find sponsors for each event at the Club Championships in October and November, more details to follow.
Anyone interested in helping with either finding main sponsors or with sponsorship at the Club Championships please talk to Jim Shelton.
