Dear All,
I would like to bid you all a farewell as the Arnold Swimming Club Newsletter Editor. I have been the editor of the newsletter for the club for the past two years. I have really enjoyed taking on this role and developing the newsletter into a regular communications medium with a modern design. I currently have a number of roles within the club and I have decided to relinquish this role for someone else to take over and develop the newsletter further.
My replacement will be Graham Davies, who most of you know coaches on poolside at a number of our training sessions. Graham has a lot to offer the club with connections with other clubs. Since Graham has joined the Club he has helped us to develop a presentation for potential sponsors to help gain some funding for the club. I hope that you will all join me in wishing Graham the very best in his new role within the club and anything that this role may lead to. Graham will be taking over this role from 2009.

  Bill gets special honour
At this years Nottinghamshire’s AGM held at Portland college in mid November, Granddad to the kids, Bill Hopkins, was presented with the Nott’s ASA blazer badge. An award given to members of the Nott’s ASA for outstanding voluntary service. Upon receiving the award the only words Bill could find were:
“I will have to buy a blazer for this now then.”
On behalf of the committee and all of Arnold Swimming Clubs past and present members, I would like to thank Bill for all of his dedicated work not only with Arnold Swimming Club but with everything in the community that Bill gets involved with. Congratulations Bill.

  Reach Out Awards

Bill Hopkins, Granddad to the Kids, has been nominated for Nottingham's Reach Out awards. The Reach Out awards recognise people who go above and beyond the call of duty to contribute to the community. Bill obviously falls into this category.

Nottingham's Evening Post Article:
A VOLUNTEER who helps hundreds of youngsters and adults at Arnold Swimming Club has been nominated for a Reach Out award. Bill Hopkins, of Earlsfield Drive, Rise Park, gives up six evenings a week to teach swimming and also helps youngsters in the Elite Disability Squad on Saturday mornings in Hucknall. Mr Hopkins, 67, became involved with the club 15 years ago after taking his son along to classes and being asked if he could help out in a session.
Since then Mr Hopkins has qualified as a Level 2 coach and is now assistant head coach at the club. He said: "I'm surprised and absolutely thrilled that somebody thinks I deserve to be nominated." He said he when he sees youngsters taking part in their first galas he feels the same sense of pride as their parents.
He said: "I love it. They are lovely kids. I'm not bothered if they are the best swimmers or not." Club chairman Jim Shelton, who nominated Mr Hopkins, said: "He coaches swimmers at the club on every night of the week and is the first choice replacement coach when other senior coaches are unavailable on Sundays. "Bill acts as a mentor to poolside helpers, Level 1 and Level 2 coaches. "He is the first choice judge at the club and he has recently qualified as a starter and is in the process of training to be a referee."

Congratulations Bill!!!

  Tony Parker Stands Down

It has been announced today that Tony Parker will be standing down from the Arnold Swimming Club Committee as Team manager. Tony will still remain as a coach at the club and help out at galas but is giving up his role as Team manager. Tony wishes to dedicate more of his time to coaching our swimmers. The Committee would like to thank Tony for all of his hard work in the past few years with this role within the club.

  Speedo League Thank’s

A Huge thank you to all of the parents involved with tonight's Speedo league. In traditional Arnold Swimming Club style, when all of our Speedo League team and those parents that were coming to either help out or spectate at the gala, were standing outside Arnold Leisure Centre in the cold and rain for a coach that never showed, the select few parents and helpers grouped together and offered lifts via cars all the way to the snow dome in Tamworth so that Arnold did not miss the gala. A HUGE thank you to all that helped out.

  Club Championships

Since the Autumn newsletter was published Arnold Swimming club have now completed all 3 of its Club Championship nights.
In the first Championship night we saw 81 of our members compete in a staggering 204 swims. Out of these swims we saw 127 Personal Best Times generated and 15 Club Records broken.
In our 2nd night we saw 71 members compete in 162 swims. Out of these swims, 117 Personal Best Times were gained and 11 Club Records were smashed.
Our final night of 2008 saw 61 members battle it out over 189 swims, claiming 127 Personal Best times and 12 Club Records.
Also on the final night we saw the Coaches Challenge, A fun event organised by Arnold Swimming clubs Senior Coaches who join in to battle against swimming members of the club.
With many entries for the Club championships there has been a lot of hard work happening behind the scenes, from organising the galas to helping out on poolside on gala nights. Arnold Swimming Club would like to thank all of those people involved. Without your help and support Arnold Swimming Club Members would not have had a championship to compete in.
